Vitamin K2 belongs to the vitamin K family, a group of fat-soluble nutrients involved in the activation of vitamin K-dependent proteins. In bone, this includes osteocalcin, a protein that depends on vitamin K for carboxylation. Through this role, vitamin K contributes to the maintenance of bones.
Not all Vitamin K is the same
Vitamin K is a family of related fat-soluble compounds. Vitamin K1, known as phylloquinone, and vitamin K2, known collectively as menaquinones, belong to the same vitamin family but are structurally distinct. Vitamin K2 itself includes several menaquinones, identified by names such as MK-4 and MK-7.
Why MK-7?
Among the menaquinones, MK-7 is distinguished by its longer persistence in circulation. Compared with shorter-chain forms such as MK-4, MK-7 remains detectable for longer, allowing more sustained circulating levels with regular intake.
Why all-trans matters
MK-7 can exist in different isomeric forms, principally trans and cis. The all-trans configuration is the biologically active form used by vitamin K-dependent proteins, while cis isomers do not have the same biological activity. For an MK-7 ingredient, purity therefore matters, not simply the number of micrograms stated on the label.
